Phonography marks Dr. James Kelly’s first solo exhibition in the UAE, where he presents his personal archive of vinyl records that exemplify several experimental disc-cutting techniques. The exhibition includes a curated collection of unusual records that exploit some of the medium’s creative potentials and limitations. The exhibition reveals the breadth of phonography as an artistic discipline.

Dr. Kelly has been a turntablist for over 20 years — an artist who uses turntables as musical instruments. His research is focused on vinyl records and their use in music composition, performance, and sound art. In his practice, he explores the creative use of a disc-cutting lathe –– a machine traditionally used  in manufacturing records. He pioneered using a vinyl lathe as part of the compositional process to create turntable-based music.
