Ways of Seeing

This book is published in conjunction with the traveling exhibition under the same title, which premiered in Istanbul, at ARTER – Space of Art, followed by a new edition for the Villa Empain, Boghossian Foundation in Brussels.

The Abu Dhabi edition of this exhibition and publication contains a substantially altered checklist, as the Brussels edition also did from the Istanbul edition. Here, it begins with an introduction by NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery Executive Director and NYUAD Chief Curator Maya Allison, and turns its focus on interaction specifically with the Gulf and the Arab world.

This catalogue features a comprehensive academic essay by the curators providing in-depth analysis of the main curatorial strands within the exhibition. In addition, it features two scholarly contributions by Dr. Mary Acton, author of the best-selling How to Look at Paintings, and Dr. Stephanie Moser, Head of the Department of Archaeology at the University of Southampton and author of Wondrous Curiosities. Further to the exhibition, the catalogue provides a thorough investigation into the act of looking within various art-historical and museological contexts.
